DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Big budget cuts and layoffs are impacting a Durham nonprofit battling homelessness and poverty. Urban Ministries of Durham is now cutting nearly $400,000 from a budget of about $3.8 million. The organization is also laying off seven people across all departments on June 20.

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The contributions of Durham County women who served in the United States Armed Forces were celebrated Thursday. The county’s inaugural Women Veterans Recognition Day Celebration honored at least 2,000 known female veterans in Durham County. Durham veteran Diana Nicole Graham served eight years in the North Carolina National Guard and deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Some people haven’t paid their rent since the pandemic hit in 2020, which is contributing to a big financial shortfall for the Durham Housing Authority. Now, the largest provider of affordable housing in Durham is asking the city to bail them out of the hole. Durham Housing Authority Interim CEO Anthony Snell told CBS 17 they’re only collecting about 66% of the rent money they are owed.

(WNCN) – Duke University plans to offer new buyouts to faculty ahead of likely staff layoffs in response to the scope of threats of cuts to federal funding under the Trump administration. In a video message released on Thursday, Duke University President Vincent Price addressed the private school’s community as it enters “challenging times.”“We will, for the foreseeable future, have to be smaller – and do our work with fewer people,” Price said.
