There were signs early on that Michael Steffman was destined to be a lawman. As a kid, he once reported a shoplifter who slid a VCR under his jacket. Then there was a time a couple of years later when a state trooper, by chance, invited him to sit in a patrol car as he took radar. Steffman ended up in an impromptu ride-along that day as the officer chased down a speeder. “And I was like, ‘That is the coolest thing,’” Steffman remembered.

The new City of Mulberry is entering its first comprehensive planning process and will submit those documents next month. The city, formed in January, must provide comprehensive plan information to the state’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) by June 30. A comprehensive plan helps guide municipal and county leaders in zoning and capital facilities decisions. The city council approved a proposal on Monday (May 5) to complete the comprehensive plan submission.

A 178-unit townhome development is proposed for a 61-acre assemblage in Braselton on Friendship Rd., roughly a mile from its intersection with Spout Springs Rd.The Braselton Planning Commission will hold a May 19 (6 p.m.) public hearing over the proposal, followed by a June 5 (4 p.m.) public hearing in front of the Braselton Town Council. The site is located at 2846 Friendship Rd. and 3036 Friendship Rd. in Hall County. The property is owned by Friendship Road 53, LLC.

The Jackson County Board of Education has officially authorized the issuance of $200 million of construction bonds to build three West Jackson schools in addition to other county-wide projects. The school board passed a resolution on Monday (April 21) to issue those bonds, which were approved in a March referendum with 75% of the vote. The BOE also approved a resolution declaring those referendum results.

A First Watch restaurant in Braselton is coming after the town council approved site and architectural plans for the breakfast and lunch chain. Meanwhile, site plan approval for another restaurant, Miller's Ale House, is on hold for now until architectural plans are submitted. Both establishments are planned for the Braselton Village development where a Publix and Lowe's are under construction across from Chateau Elan.
