The visiting Scarborough Shooting Stars weren’t the only ones on the court living up to that nickname when they visited the Niagara River Lions Friday night in St. Catharines. Another star making his shots — and scoring his way into the Canadian Elite Basketball League record book — was River Lions guard Khalil Ahmad. A lot has changed since Richard (Griff) Griffin interviewed a Toronto Blue Jays prospect playing at the Class-A level in St. Catharines 28 years ago. In 1997, Griffin was beginning his third year as baseball columnist for the Toronto Star and outfielder Vernon Wells was starting his first — and only — season in the New York-Penn League with the Stompers. They chatted in a concourse at Community Park, the Merritton home of the Stompers and, before them, the St. Catharines Blue Jays.
