    Horse racing will resume in the U.S. Virgin Islands early next month, after a four-month shutdown of the Clinton E. Phipps Sr. Race Track to complete recommended improvements of the St. Thomas race track. The annual St. Thomas Carnival Races, which marked the reopening of Phipps Race Track last year after a seven-year shutdown, will be held Friday, May 2, it was revealed during Wednesday’s meeting of the St. Thomas Horse Racing Commission.

    The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation will send one of its largest contingents ever to Trinidad and Tobago next month for the 2025 CARIFTA Games, the Caribbean’s major track and field meet for up-and-coming athletes. The 52nd annual CARIFTA Games will be held Saturday, April 19, through Monday, April 21, at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad, with 68 total events spread out among boys and girls in the under-17 and under-20 age groups.

    The U.S. Virgin Islands will be represented by a dozen junior swimmers at next month’s 38th CARIFTA 2025 Aquatic Championships meet in Trinidad and Tobago. The USVI swimmers will compete in both the long-course swimming events, set for April 19-22 at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva, Trinidad; as well as in the open-water swimming events April 23 at Five Islands Beach in Chaguramas, Trinidad.

    J’Wan Roberts is a rarity among college basketball players — one who has stayed with one school for more than a year, leaving for either the NBA or hitting the transfer portal for another team. But with the start of the NCAA Tournament approaching, the St. Thomas native is looking at the conclusion of his sixth and final season with the University of Houston’s Cougars. It’s a conclusion the 23-year-old Roberts isn’t looking forward to — unless it comes with an NCAA championship.

Tournament officials unveiled the field for the 25th-anniversary edition of the men’s Paradise Jam, scheduled for Nov.
