    A small but vociferous group of people gathered on the Aloy “Wenty” Nielsen Bypass/St. Croix Bypass Saturday, in support of millions on the mainland, to protest the Trump administration’s methods of government and millions of dollars being spent on a military parade for the president’s birthday. “I first felt frustration, then anger and fear. I’m here to show support for those stateside protesters and because we don’t get to vote for president,” said one protester.

    For hours Saturday, scores of people gathered at the D.C. Canegata Recreation Center to learn everything it takes to own and care for a home in the Virgin Islands from vendors and the V.I. Housing Finance Authority. VIHFA staff gave out literature and talked to people about the various housing programs through the V.I. Government. Kikya Kirnon, VIHFA communications director, said they were also highlighting the emergency rental assistance program because it expires at the end of September.

    After surviving breast and thyroid cancer, Yvonne Ashley Galiber started a non-profit foundation in 2007 bearing her name to advocate and aid St. Croix residents who are fighting the disease. On May 28, Galiber lost her own battle against cancer. In the first few days since her passing, almost 200 community leaders and friends have conveyed love, support and condolences to her family on the YAG Breast Cancer Foundation’s Facebook page.

    In conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month, the Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands presented a webinar Wednesday that outlined steps to take when working with young people with mental health concerns. Shammi Carr and Dawn O’Bryan of the Disability Rights Center moderated the program. The first presenter was parent advocate Rebecca Russell, who spoke eloquently about her son, born with Down syndrome.
