Before 2004, St. Croix was historically known as a snake-free island, but as of Monday, more than 1,500 reptiles — mostly red-tail boa constrictors — had been caught on the island. William Coles, chief of Environmental Education for the V.I. One of the experts who addressed the CannaPro Summit Saturday was Joanne Moorhead, executive director of the V.I. Office of Cannabis Regulation, who fielded questions from the audience as the territory prepares to approve the first applications to cultivate by June 13. St. Thomas and St. Croix will each be granted 15 cultivation licenses, while St. John will receive five. Eventually, the two larger islands will license seven dispensaries apiece, with three dispensaries planned for St. John.

People interested in the cannabis business can learn more and meet others in the field at the CannaPro Summit this Saturday on St. Croix. Adult-use cannabis is legal in 24 states and the Virgin Islands is about to open a local market. The Harmony Collection, sponsors of the summit, is made up of several native and longtime residents of St. Croix. Their goal is to own a handful of dispensaries by 2028, according to Jody Starr, one of the sponsors.
