At the end of April, I’d seen Facebook posts showing Baltimore orioles in the trees behind the Visitors Center at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. I was working a later shift on May 1, so before work, I went to look for myself. When I arrived, I immediately saw them, many of them. They were moving around a lot, and the trees had a lot of leaves, so getting a good photo was a little tricky. I think I pulled it off. THE METHOD: Nikon D6 camera with a Nikon 600 mm f-4 lens.

This week I’m sharing a picture of a bird that I think is kind of cool looking with its upturned bill. This is an American avocet that I photographed at the end of October at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge near Smyrna, Delaware. This is a bird that makes an occasional visit to Lancaster County, but I’ve not been able to photograph one close to home. I had made several trips to Bombay Hook in the second half of 2024, and there were usually a lot of avocets there until it got cooler outside.
