It was one of those red-letter days at Andrew's Book Sack in Slidell - and there was a cookie cake. Wednesday's cake was a symbol of something bigger, of course, the celebration to mark one year of Andrew Labit's life as the owner of a used bookstore. Labit bought the Book Sack in April 2024, drawing praise from a host of used bookstore aficionados who had feared the worst when the tiny place was put up for sale. Used bookstores, it seems, build strong relationships with customers.

But it’s increasingly difficult to win voter support for the taxes needed to cover rising criminal justice costs, the law enforcement leaders from St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes told a lunchtime gathering of the Northshore Business Council.

A woman shot her husband, then fatally shot herself outside a Ponchatoula fast food restaurant Monday evening as police officers ordered her to drop the gun, authorities said. In a news release on their Facebook page Tuesday, the Ponchatoula Police Department said it responded to the McDonald's on West Pine Street around 5:16 p.m. in response to a report of a shooting.

A Slidell man was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle crash, authorities said. Akeem Holden, 35, was driving a 2024 Can-Am Spyder eastbound on West Hall Avenue just before 4 p.m. and was ejected from the vehicle after it crashed into a 2025 Honda CR-V that attempting to turn left onto West Hall from Weilwood Drive, Slidell police said in a news release. The Slidell Police Department said toxicology samples were collected as part of the department's standard crash investigation procedures.
