    GRAND FORKS — Jamie Dietzler attended races at River Cities Speedway as a child, watching his father, Roy, drive the No. 39 car. They drove push trucks together in the 1990s. In 2014, Dietzler decided to try racing himself. "I bought a cheap B-mod off of Craigslist and went racing," he said. "The B-mod is the only race car I've ever driven.     GRAND FORKS — There is only one finalist for the UND men's hockey associate head coaching position, according to UND Human Resources. It is former UND captain Matt Smaby, who is now the head coach of the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League. Smaby has led Waterloo to the USHL's Clark Cup Finals, which begin Friday. UND appears to be waiting until the finals are over to work on finalizing a contract with Smaby.

    GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks Red River girls tennis team brought back one state individual qualifier from last season. That was Addy Lommen, who reached state in doubles but did not place. This was not supposed to be one of those dominant Roughrider teams of the past, loaded with individual state champions. But the Roughriders have been one of the big surprises in the East Region.

Other NCAA head coaches, assistant coaches and administrators were in it, too. They discussed issues surrounding college hockey.

    Grand Forks Brad Malone retired last spring after a 14-year-old professional career with more than 200 NHL games for the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers. He started his coaching career this fall as an assistant at the Oshawa general of the Ontario Hockey League. He was promoted to head coach in December. Now Malone Oshawa has led to the final of Ontario Hockey League.
