New drivers set to join late model field at River Cities Speedway

GRAND FORKS — Jamie Dietzler attended races at River Cities Speedway as a child, watching his father, Roy, drive the No. 39 car. They drove push trucks together in the 1990s. In 2014, Dietzler decided to try racing himself. "I bought a cheap B-mod off of Craigslist and went racing," he said. "The B-mod is the only race car I've ever driven. I didn't do go-karts or street stocks. It was quite a learning process. I wasn't a crew guy for anyone.
Matt Smaby is the lone finalist for UND's associate head coaching position

GRAND FORKS — There is only one finalist for the UND men's hockey associate head coaching position, according to UND Human Resources. It is former UND captain Matt Smaby, who is now the head coach of the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League. Smaby has led Waterloo to the USHL's Clark Cup Finals, which begin Friday. UND appears to be waiting until the finals are over to work on finalizing a contract with Smaby.

GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks Red River girls tennis team brought back one state individual qualifier from last season. That was Addy Lommen, who reached state in doubles but did not place. This was not supposed to be one of those dominant Roughrider teams of the past, loaded with individual state champions. But the Roughriders have been one of the big surprises in the East Region.

GRAND FORKS โ David Carle was busy Monday when news hit social media that he signed a contract extension at the University of Denver. He was in a Zoom meeting with NCAA president Charlie Baker. Other NCAA head coaches, assistant coaches and administrators were in it, too. They discussed issues surrounding college hockey.

Grand Forks Brad Malone retired last spring after a 14-year-old professional career with more than 200 NHL games for the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers. He started his coaching career this fall as an assistant at the Oshawa general of the Ontario Hockey League. He was promoted to head coach in December. Now Malone Oshawa has led to the final of Ontario Hockey League.

May 2—GRAND FORKS — UND drew more fans per home game last season than any North American hockey team outside of the NHL. An average of 11,614 attended UND's 18 regular-season home games in Ralph Engelstad Arena. AdvertisementIt ranked No. 1 among college hockey teams for the 11th consecutive season. May 2—GRAND FORKS — UND sophomore goaltender Hobie Hedquist has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will head to Ferris State next season. Hedquist, of Heron Lake, Minn., was 8-5 with an .899 save percentage across two seasons. GRAND FORKS — UND sophomore goaltender Hobie Hedquist has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Hedquist, of Heron Lake, Minn., was 8-5 with an .899 save percentage across two seasons. As a sophomore, Hedquist made 10 appearances, going 3-4 with a 2.80 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage. He served as backup to T.J. Semptimphelter. As a freshman, the 6-foot-2, 192-pound Hedquist went 5-1 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. He backed up Ludvig Persson.

GRAND FORKS — Canadian Hockey League players will be eligible to play college hockey for the first time in decades beginning this fall. NCAA teams have gone into the three CHL leagues — the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League — to recruit talented players. But coaches are finding out that a lot of them will not be academically eligible to play college hockey. It's not that the CHL players are bad students.
