RED LAKE COUNTY, Minn. — Red Lake County boys basketball Steve Philion has been coaching high school basketball for 51 years. He has seen close calls with his Rebels in 2016, 2020 and 2021 but for the first time, the co-op is making the trip to the Minnesota Class A state tournament. The Rebels have the hot hand in scoring this postseason, which has been a welcome trait as each game grows with importance.

DEVILS LAKE — North Border's big men stepped up at the right time. Just past the halfway mark of the fourth quarter, Brody Berg drove and scored to push the Eagles' lead to 43-34. It came after a free throw and turnover caused by Weston Cosley, and it marked the first consecutive points for North Border in the quarter. GRAND FORKS — The pressure was on late for Thompson on Tuesday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. In the North Dakota Division A Region 2 semifinals against Four Winds-Minnewaukan, the Tommies were able to create some distance on the scoreboard, but a deep 3-pointer from Joran Lohnes with 7 seconds remaining made it 46-44. Gavin Krogstad sank his free throws to seal the deal and send the Tommies — with a 48-44 victory — to Thursday's Region 2 Division A final.

GRAND FORKS — After a hot start, Grafton was looking to battle back against Devils Lake on Tuesday night. Every inch of momentum the Spoilers looked to build on in the fourth quarter was squashed by the Palmers. MINOT — One program was going to come out of Minot with a first-ever state championship. Through poised performances from Skye Neilson, Madison Anderson and Katie Burchill, Valley City was crowned. Twenty-three points from Burchill, 16 points from Neilson and 12 points from Anderson powered the Hi-Liners to a 67-44 win, as they were able to put a stop to a wild run from the Thompson Tommies in the Division A title game on Saturday.

MINOT — Thompson was just looking to get into the tournament this year. Now, on the big stage, the Tommies are looking to prove they can take down the teams that handed them their five losses this season. The Tommies were able to get past the first test in Rugby on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota A state girls basketball tournament. In a 59-39 win, Thompson was able to get the depth scoring that more often than not proves to be a difference-maker.
