Warroad's Slukynsky brothers lead Western Michigan into NCHC championship

ST. PAUL — The last time Hampton Slukynsky played in a hockey game at the Xcel Energy Center was March 11, 2023. Slukynsky and his Warroad team lost to Mahtomedi 6-5 in double overtime in the Minnesota Class A state championship game. Two years and 10 days later, Slukynsky earned a win at the X. Slukynsky and Western Michigan beat UND 4-2 in the second National Collegiate Hockey Conference semifinal game Friday night. Slukynsky ended with 23 saves in the win.

MINNEAPOLIS — Red Lake County’s Connor Duden had never played at Williams Arena, the Minnesota Gophers’ basketball arena in Minneapolis. He’s never attended a game there. But he led Red Lake County’s offense, dropping 30 points in the No. 3 Rebels' Minnesota Class A state semifinal game against No. 2 Dawson-Boyd. Duden’s night wasn’t enough, though, as the Blackjacks pulled away late to beat Red Lake County 80-66 Friday afternoon.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Red Lake County boys basketball team recovered momentum just in time Thursday night at the Target Center. Red Lake County’s Connor Duden nailed a 3-pointer to put the Rebels up 60-56 over Goodhue with three minutes left in the Minnesota Class A state quarterfinals. Duden and Ben Gullingsrud then went a combined 5-for-6 from the free-throw line to seal the Rebels’ 68-61 win over Goodhue — Red Lake County’s first state quarterfinal win in the 18-year history of the co-op.

GRAND FORKS — On March 3, North Border boys basketball lost a District 3 tournament game to Park River/Fordville-Lankin. The score? 65-64. That game is the Eagles’ only loss this season — and just the fourth time North Border allowed over 60 points to an opponent this season. North Border, which holds opponents to 48.7 points per game on average, will play Westhope/Newburg in the North Dakota Division B boys basketball state tournament at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the Minot State Dome.

Woodson, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 8.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for the Fighting Hawks this year. Woodson, a native of Baytown, Texas, spent the previous two seasons at Tyler (TX) Junior College before transferring to UND in April.

Mar. 17—GRAND FORKS — UND women's basketball forward Kiera Pemberton intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal when the window opens March 25 with two years of eligibility remaining. On3 Sports first reported the news, saying sources confirmed Pemberton's intention on Monday afternoon. The 6-foot-1 sophomore from Langley, B.C. started every game for the Fighting Hawks this season en route to a Summit League all-second team nod. Pemberton averaged 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this season.
