PHOENIX — Arizonans who need help paying their summer air-conditioning bills might not get it. The federal workers who run a 40-year-old program for heating and cooling relief have been fired. "This is a lifeline for many people who can't afford to pay their utility bills," said Kelly McGowan, executive director of Wildfire. The anti-poverty organization represents community agencies that distribute federal dollars to vulnerable Arizonans. "These are families in our community," McGowan said.

The web pages featured the Navajo Code Talkers, whose unbreakable coded messages during World War II confounded America's enemies, and Marine Private Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian who was one of six soldiers captured in an iconic photo planting the American flag in Iwo Jima.
