ST. JOSEPH COUNTY — The UAW St. Joseph County All-Star track and field meet is set to take place in about a month. This year, Mendon High School will be the host site for the annual event, which will take place on May 27. The top eight athletes in each event throughout the county will compete in the all-star matchup. The event is not a scored event, but there is one male and female who earn the prestigious Baker MVP award based on their finishes. These seedings will be updated each week.
Sturgis tennis beats Otsego in Wolverine Conference tennis action

STURGIS — On Monday evening, the Sturgis tennis team received a strong clash from visiting Otsego. But the Trojans were up for the challenge, winning the team portion of the match by a score of 5-3. Three of those victories for Sturgis came in singles action. All three of those wins were in straight sets as well. Gracie Perry defeated Manu Marchi by a score of 7-6, 6-3 in second singles play.

BYRON CENTER — The Sturgis girls track team continued its strong start to the season on Saturday. The Trojans competed at the Byron Center Bulldog Games Invite and came away with a third-place finish. Sturgis scored 87 points and finished with several Top 3 placements. Eleena Kelley was second overall in the discus at 121 feet, 4 inches. This distance makes her the first Trojan early qualifier, guaranteeing her a spot at the state finals.

VICKSBURG — The Sturgis girls track team continues to impress. The boys are having a strong season to this point as well. On Wednesday, the Trojans teams competed in a double dual at Vicksburg. The girls cruised to victories over Vicksburg (103-32) and Plainwell (93-44). Sturgis' 400 relay team of Tenley Banaszak, Angela Cary, Hannah Garbine and Keyanna O'Tey has the best time in the state for Division 2, they were first at 50.66 seconds.

STURGIS — Greetings, once again. We're starting to do things a little differently around here when it comes to roundups for baseball and softball, the stories are now running as "Top Performers" where you can catch up on all the highlights from the previous week in one place. I'm planning on running a baseball and softball one separately each Sunday night/Monday morning.

WHITE PIGEON — The Centreville track and field teams both reached triple digits in team points Friday at the White Pigeon Invitational. It proved to be a winning formula as the boys piled up 226 and the girls finished with 161. Both were good enough to bring home first place by the Bulldogs at the invitational. The boys earned first place in 11 of 17 events.

PLAINWELL — The Sturgis tennis team is cruising right along right now. On Monday evening, the Trojans in orange and black took out the Trojans wearing blue and white in a Wolverine Conference matchup. Sturgis came home with an 8-0 victory on the evening. All eight matches were won in straight sets for Sturgis. Cora Phillips won her match at first singles with a 6-1, 6-1 score, Gracie Perry recorded a victory of 6-1, 6-2 at second singles.

STURGIS — The Sturgis soccer program believes it is headed in the right direction. With a pair of victories already this season, the Trojans are feeling confident about what could be this year. On Friday night, Sturgis won a home match over visiting Parchment, 8-0. The win was the second on the young season for the Trojans, who are now 2-1-1 through four games. For comparison, the Trojans finished 1-17-1 last year.

MENDON — Presley Allen has logged quite a few miles with her feet. The graduating Mendon High School senior has been running for what seems like many years, but she finds herself at a spot now where giving up on that running isn't an option. For the next four years, Allen will continue putting in the distance with Goshen College, where she will extend her academic, cross country, indoor and outdoor track careers.
New comedy club brings belly laughs to historic San Antonio theater

San Antonio's comedy scene is getting a major boost. After months of renovation, the 985-seat Woodlawn Comedy venue will officially open on April 12 with two laugh-out-loud sets from '90s icon Pauly Shore. The club's site is equally iconic — the historic former Deco District home of Woodlawn Theatre, at 1920 Fredericksburg Rd. Co-owners Shane Quade and Keith LaRosa began renovating the space shortly after production company Woodlawn Theatre Inc. moved its musicals to Wonderland of the Americas.
