WSYM made its debut on December 1, 1982, initially operating under the name WFSL-TV. The station was owned by Joel Ferguson, a businessman from Lansing, through his company, F&S Development Company. It broadcasted an analog signal on channel 47. WFSL was notable for being the first new commercial television station in the region since WILX-TV began broadcasting 23 years prior.
