Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen has announced he's running for a third term in office. The Republican was joined by U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer and several state senators, including Speaker John Arch during an event Friday in the State Capitol Rotunda. Evnen first took office in 2019 and oversaw the implementation of Nebraska’s voter ID law. He said that under his leadership, no state has had more secure or accurate elections than Nebraska.

A second major Democratic challenger in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District has officially announced his campaign for the seat currently held by Republican Rep. Don Bacon. State Sen. John Cavanaugh, who has represented a midtown Omaha district in the Nebraska Legislature since 2021, said he is running for Congress to stand up for working families, veterans and seniors and to stand up to President Donald Trump.

State Auditor Mike Foley’s office has issued eight audit letters to local governments in Nebraska calling out improper financial practices in the last six weeks. The alleged infractions include a former Cedar County Commissioner using a county pickup truck for personal business, a former Farnam village clerk not billing herself for municipal services and the Decatur Housing Authority Executive Director processing over $18,000 in excessive compensation and unsupported reimbursements to herself.

A proposal banning certain forms of hemp and so-called synthetic cannabis was passed over Friday before a vote could be taken. Sen. Kathleen Kauth, who sponsored the bill, LB316, made the decision after it appeared there would not be the votes necessary to overcome a filibuster attempt. Progressives filed motions to stop an amendment, AM1574, which would have clarified that the bill wouldn’t supersede the medical marijuana initiatives Nebraskans passed in November from being added to the bill. The executive director of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission, Hobert Rupe, has been suspended without pay following a joint federal and state investigation into alleged criminal conduct. During a brief public meeting lasting fewer than three minutes Thursday afternoon, commission chairman Bruce Bailey said a federal search warrant was served at the Liquor Control Commission office Wednesday.

LB677, a bill meant to regulate medical cannabis in Nebraska, failed to make it out of the Legislature's General Affairs Committtee on a 3-5 vote, with conservative senators in opposition. But Sen. John Cavanaugh says he doesn't think the bill is "necessarily over" this session.
