WAUKESHA — A 73-year-old man New Zealand man was fined on Wednesday, nearly six months after he exposed himself in the drive-thru of a Brookfield coffee shop as part of what he said was a challenge. Donald McHaffie, of Christchurch, New Zealand, had been charged with a count of lewd and lascivious behavior. But he pleaded guilty Wednesday to three counts of disorderly conduct, court records show.

Justin Liepert, 35, has pleaded not guilty to counts of child enticement a felony, and three misdemeanor counts of sexual intercourse with a child. He waived a preliminary hearing March 19.

WAUKESHA — It would appear that crime in Waukesha continued trending in the right direction overall last year, but the community saw stepped-up enforcement of traffic laws in 2024 that led to the most citations being written in the past 10 years. Those are among the general takeaways from the data presented in the Waukesha Police Department’s 2024 Annual Report released recently. The department saw 49,864 computer aided dispatch entries in 2024, up almost 400 from the year earlier.

WAUKESHA — A major hallway that connects the public to civil, family and criminal courtrooms in the Courts Tower is now open. On Monday, the north-south wing of the Waukesha County Courthouse reopened after 18 months. The north-south wing was closed due to the massive courthouse renovation project. After going through security screening at the public entrance, visitors can now walk straight through, down a new hallway to access courtrooms.

WAUKESHA — A recently released report shows that voters across the state approved most of the school referendums asked of them this year, a good chunk of them passing after a second or subsequent attempt after prior failures. The report issued this month by the Wisconsin Policy Forum indicates that of the 94 ballot questions on school referendums asked of voters this year, citizens approved 53 of them. That 56.4% success rate was a slight increase over the 54.9% approved in 2023.

WAUKESHA — The attorney for a Waukesha man accused of killing his neighbor and concealing the body in a tarp where it was found months later is asking a judge to suppress all the evidence police found in a search of his car, including the alleged murder weapon, saying police lacked cause to search his car following a speeding stop. Kevin Lychwick, 62, is charged with one count of first-degree homicide and another of hiding a corpse, and is being held on $5 million cash bail.

Man charged in thefts a week after he died

WAUKESHA — The state of Wisconsin has dismissed the theft and related charges it filed against a Milwaukee man who allegedly stole tools from vehicles, harmonicas from another and a woman’s car, learning last week that the man died a week before the charges were issued. DaShaun Elam was charged April 14 in Waukesha County Circuit Court with theft up to $10,000, receiving stolen property over $10,000, and a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property less than $2,500.
