What's happening: One of the Upper Peninsula’s largest Registered Investment Advisors (RIA) has been sold to a growing out-of-state advisement group. Mommaerts-Mahaney Financial Services was obtained by Omaha-based Carson Group, shifting control of more than $314 million in client assets to the quickly growing RIA. Carson Group grows to over $41 billion in assets, including recent acquisitions across the Midwest in Chicago and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

What's happening: After devastating ice storms in the Eastern Upper Peninsula, the entire U.P. has been declared as a state of emergency by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The damage to infrastructure and the environment has been extensive. The Michigan National Guard was mobilized to help with road clearing efforts. Many emergency shelters were filled with locals without power. Campgrounds and state parks remain closed while the cleanup continues.

What's happening: The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Animal Welfare Fund grants. Benefiting directly from the funding will be the Delta Animal Shelter in Escanaba and the Ontonagon County Animal Shelter. Some $150,000 will be distributed to 28 registered animal shelters across Michigan to support animal welfare projects.
