Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist who ran a grassroots campaign that inspired younger voters through a relentless focus on making New York City more affordable, was set to win the Democratic primary for mayor Tuesday, toppling former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates in a political earthquake that will reverberate throughout the country.

Early voting turnout in the Democratic primary election for mayor has doubled compared to four years ago — and experts say there's a possibility the numbers signal a "transformative" shift in New York City's electorate. A Gothamist analysis of data from the Board of Elections shows that 131,434 people cast ballots at their poll sites in the first four days of early voting this year. That’s double the number of voters at that point in the 2021 mayoral race.

It’s decision time. Early voting for New York City’s primary starts Saturday and goes until Sunday, June 22. Primary Day is June 24. Now’s your chance to cast ballots in the Democratic primary for mayor, comptroller and public advocate — provided you’re registered as a Democrat. There is also a Republican primary for city comptroller and three local party positions. If you still need to register to vote, the deadline for that is also Saturday.

Andrew Cuomo’s mayoral campaign clawed back more than $500,000 on Monday that had been withheld by the Campaign Finance Board as it continues to investigate whether the former governor illegally coordinated with a super PAC. The city watchdog had initially withheld nearly $1.3 million from Cuomo’s campaign over an advertisement funded by the Fix the City super PAC. The penalty reflected the amount of money Fix the City initially said it spent on the advertisement that began airing last month.

New York City voters’ second experience with ranked-choice voting is only weeks away. The election method – which will determine the winner of the Democratic mayoral primary on June 24, as well as other races – is intended to give voters more choice at the ballot box and discourage negative campaigns by politicians. (Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa is the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee.)Want extra practice with a ranked-choice election?
