Trial begins for Travon Brunson in fatal Hill City shooting

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Day one wrapped up in a trial tied to a deadly shooting in the Hill City. A jury began hearing the case against Travon Brunson, who is accused of shooting and killing Tajuan Johnson in April of 2024. According to the Commonwealth, Brunson shot and killed Johnson after a disagreement turned violent in the parking lot outside of Mizumi Japanese Restaurant. Lawyers argued that Johnson shoved Brunson, who, in turn, shot and killed him.
Rain impacts Smith Mountain Lake water clarity, latest testing results promising

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WSET) — Volunteers are once again testing the water quality at Smith Mountain Lake. They began in May and have just released the first results. The report found the water clarity isn't as great as historical averages, due to heavy rain at the beginning of May. The samples collected are given to environmental scientists at Ferrum College. They look for water clarity, chlorophyll, and phosphorus.

To mark the occasion, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will be hosting a commemoration ceremony on Friday. CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — The Drakes Branch Fire and Rescue Department is asking for your prayers after one of their own lost his home to a fire on Sunday. Floyd Napier is a lifetime member of the department. When his home went up in flames, it was all hands on deck to rescue one of their own. First Assistant Chief James Napier, who's related to Floyd, saw the smoke and called in reinforcements. Chief Napier ran into the burning building and quickly got Floyd out of the home.

WSET-- — Multiple cities and counties in the ABC 13 area ended up on a list of sanctuary jurisdictions by the Department of Homeland Security. The list includes Halifax, Charlotte, and Amherst Counties, along with the cities of Martinsville and Lynchburg. However, they all say they aren't supposed to be on the list.
New London Tech Disc Golf Course reopening Saturday

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — The New London Tech Disc Golf Course is reopening on Saturday. The course has been closed since March for crews to relocate nine holes. This was so the county could expand the New London Business and Technology Center. When visiting, you can expect new tee pads, fairways, bridges, and parking for easier access. Parking for hole one is on the right once you enter the center, just beyond the New London Emergency Services building.
