Pakistani mixed martial arts fighter Shahzaib Rind on Tuesday lamented that it was the government’s “bad luck” that it did not support its country’s heroes after his 2-1 victory over India at Dubai’s Karate Combat 45 event over the weekend. Karate Combat, which describes itself as the world’s “premier full-contact karate league”, held a “night of martial arts excellence” with its debut event in Dubai on April 20.

A police constable was martyred in an attack on a checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Battagram district on Tuesday. The KP police said Constable Amjad Hussain was martyred by firing from unknown miscreants while performing his duty at a checkpost in Kas Pul.

Three terrorists were killed by security forces in an intelligence-based operation in Balochistan’s Pishin District, the military’s media wing said on Tuesday. A press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the operation took place last night on the reported presence of terrorists in the area.

The US State Department’s annual human rights assessment found “significant” abuses in India’s northeastern Manipur state last year and attacks on minorities, journalists and dissenting voices in the rest of the country. Manipur has seen fierce fighting between its tribal Kuki-Zo and majority Meitei populations after a court order a year ago suggested the Kuki’s minority privileges be extended to the Meitei. More than 200 people have been killed.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves would reach “anywhere between $9 to $10 billion” by the end of June. Addressing the inaugural session of the seventh ‘Leaders in Islamic Business Summit’ in Islamabad, he said the expected position in June would be a “much better position in terms of where we were [in the previous year]”. The minister further said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should not be seen as “an end, but a means to an end”.

Global temperatures hit record highs last year, and the UN’s weather and climate agency said Asia was warming at a particularly rapid pace. The World Meteorological Organisation said the impact of heatwaves in Asia was becoming more severe, with melting glaciers threatening the region’s future water security. The WMO said Asia was warming faster than the global average, with temperatures last year nearly two degrees Celsius above the 1961 to 1990 average.

KHYBER: A policeman was martyred when suspected militants opened fire at him in Landi Kotal, while a young Tirah resident was executed by the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan affiliates in Bar Qambarkhel area of the valley on Sunday. An official at the Shah Kas police centre said unidentified militants gunned down constable, Aminullah in Sultankhel locality. Following the incident, he said law enforcement personnel conducted a search operation in the area, but could not apprehend anyone.

MANSEHRA: The Lower Kohistan police have beefed up security for Chinese convoys in the region to prevent terrorist attacks, said district police officer Dr Mohammad Umar on Monday. “Besides fighting terrorism, we [the police] are also ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals associated with mega energy projects on our soil, especially on the Karakoram Highway,” the DPO told a function at the police lines.
