WINCHESTER — A Front Royal man is in custody after allegedly fleeing on foot and hiding in a residential yard following a high-speed crash into a telephone pole on Front Royal Pike in Frederick County. Cody Allan Smallwood, 31, of the 400 block of Western Lane, was arrested Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated and felony eluding of law enforcement, along with multiple other traffic violations.

BERRYVILLE — A Berryville man is awaiting extradition to New Jersey after authorities say he sexually abused a juvenile under the age of 16. Jose Guzman Sanchez, 52, was arrested Monday in Berryville. He is charged with third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

A Winchester police officer whose use of force during a March arrest was captured in a viral video will not face criminal charges. Morgan J. Gilcrest is scheduled to return to “light duty” on Monday, according to Winchester Communications Director Kit Redmer. WINCHESTER — A man accused of molesting three juvenile girls and a man who busted through a fence and allegedly ran over a homeowner were among 37 indicted Thursday by a Frederick County Circuit Court grand jury. John Scott Kardatzke, 54, of Stephens City, is charged with six counts of aggravated sexual battery of a victim under the age of 13.

A Stephens City man has been charged in connection with a collision Sunday night on Interstate 81 in West Virginia that left a woman dead. Felony charges of driving under the influence causing death and hit-and-run causing death were filed Tuesday morning against Angel Candelario-Jose. WINCHESTER — A Winchester man was arrested over the weekend after police said he illegally entered a woman’s home and assaulted her while she was attempting to sell the property. Jed Levi McCarthy, 60, is charged with entering a home to commit assault and assault and battery. A two-vehicle crash late Tuesday morning caused significant traffic delays on Interstate 81 near mile marker 305.9 in Frederick County, south of Stephens City. One of the vehicles involved was hauling a camper trailer, which spilled furniture across the roadway upon impact. The crash backed up traffic for several miles and led to the closure of all northbound lanes shortly before 1 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation website.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting Sunday in the Shawneeland community in western Frederick County, according to a media release from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO). Authorities say the teenager called 911 “in the late afternoon,” stating he had shot his stepfather inside their home. When deputies arrived, they found the stepfather inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds.
