With the Suffolk Show opening its gates today, welcoming thousands of visitors to the ever-popular two-day event, we’ve gone back through the archives to find our coverage of when a royal visitor graced the event. It was June 1, 1986. Chris de Burgh’s hit song Lady in Red was a constant on the airwaves and Suffolk was about to welcome its own ‘lady in red’ in the form of Princess Diana, who dressed in the vibrant colour for her first visit to the county for the Suffollk Show.

With the bank holiday weekend upon us, why not make the most of the extra day by getting out and about to some of Suffolk’s glorious gardens? National Garden Scheme (NGS) sites across West Suffolk will be opening across the three-day weekend, welcoming visitors. Today, the garden at Wyken Hall, Stanton, IP31 2DW, will be open for NGS from 10am-5pm.

Tickets for a new Halloween trail event set to transform Thetford Forest go on sale this morning. Billed as a spooky adventure under the stars, High Lodge, at Santon Downham, near Brandon, will host an illuminated trail offering a glimpse into a glowing, ghostly wonderland.

Controversial eco-flats in Bury St Edmunds are set to be demolished after fresh plans for the prominent site were approved. The Kings Road Goodfellows flats, which were built in 2008 and have been empty since 2021, will be replaced with three homes and six apartments after West Suffolk Council planners gave the nod. Tenants of the 12 existing flats, previously owned by Havebury Housing, were moved out after extensive maintenance requirements were identified.

A £4.1 million Government grant is set fund work to decarbonise leisure centres in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill. West Suffolk Council has been awarded funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, following a successful application to the public sector decarbonisation scheme. The grant is designed to support the removal of gas from public buildings meeting set criteria.
