Jackson named Teacher of the Year

Margaret Jackson, a middle school English language arts teacher, has been named Teacher of the Year by Craven County Schools. Plein Air Art Festival returns to New Bern

The fifth annual North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival will return to New Bern Monday with eight days of art, workshops and music. Starting Monday, the New Bern Farmers Market, at 421 S. Front St., will be filled with 37 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists through Sunday. The festival celebrates the art of painting outdoors, or en plein air, a French term meaning open air, said Kippy Hammond, co-founder of the N.C. Plein Air Art Festival.

REAL ID enforcement date approaches

As spring and summer travel ramp up, travelers booking flights should ensure sure their identification won’t keep them grounded. Starting May 7, the federal government will require all travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an acceptable alternative to board a commercial flight and enter secure federal buildings. REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star at the top and are issued by each state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

After traveling around the country with the United States Coast Guard, Sarah and Shaun Ross settled in New Bern to live out their long-time dream of opening the Firefly Cafe. The Firefly Cafe opened at 901 B Pollock St. in New Bern just over a month ago, after extensive renovations to the building. Shaun said the atmosphere at the cafe is unique because it’s a comfortable space where people can relax and enjoy fresh, homemade food.
