A man and woman are fighting for their lives following a crash involving a wrong-way driver that left him and the couple’s baby dead in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles Monday night. The incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. as the family of three was traveling southbound on Western Avenue near 46th Street when police say a man in a stolen vehicle was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and crossed over the center divider.

Authorities confirmed Wednesday morning that a mother and daughter were killed in a shooting near an elementary school in Compton Tuesday evening. Deputies were called to the scene on West Caldwell Street and South Central Avenue near Caldwell Street Elementary around 7:15 p.m. where they found a crashed Toyota sedan stopped on the sidewalk near a traffic pole.

The top financial advisor for Los Angeles says the city is facing a nearly $1 billion budget shortfall heading into the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The budget crisis means the city’s already embattled Mayor Karen Bass will inevitably need to make cuts to departments and layoff city workers, Administrative Officer Matt Szabo told the City Council Wednesday. “We are not looking at dozens or even hundreds of layoffs, but thousands,” Szabo said.

Police are searching for four suspects involved in a smoke shop robbery that also led to a pursuit across two counties late Thursday night. The events began around 11 p.m. when the two victims were lured to the Hubci Smoke Shop on the 7200 block of Melrose Avenue in the Fairfax neighborhood of Los Angeles by a group of men claiming they wanted help recording a music video.
