Some deceptive telemarketer practices would end under a pair of bills advanced by North Carolina lawmakers Tuesday. A House judiciary committee on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to House Bill 520, which would crack down on telemarketers who try to trick people into answering their calls by displaying a phone number with a local area code — numbers that sometimes belong to private citizens. The bill would ban telephone networks from selling people’s numbers to telemarketers.
