A GoFundMe has been launched to help the children of a Jefferson County father killed in an industrial accident at U.S. Steel in Fairfield. Micheal Dewaine Townsend, 39, was injured at 10 p.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead at Princeton Baptist Medical Center at 11:14 p.m.Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Matt Angelo said Townsend, who lived in the Bessemer area, sustained blunt force injuries while the railcar he was riding sideswiped another railcar. Additional details weren’t released.

A Montgomery man is behind bars, accused of setting a woman on a fire at a motel. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 4 a.m. Monday to the motel in the 1200 block of West South Boulevard on a report of an assault and kidnapping. Deputies safely recovered the victim. She was hospitalized with serious injuries, said Assistant Chief Deputy Wesley Richerson. A short time later, deputies located and arrested 26-year-old Amajay Shomari Nelson-Cox.

An investigation at a Shelby County home has shut down the roadway for more than two hours. Sheriff’s office criminal investigators and the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force went to a home Wednesday afternoon in the 5100 block of South Shades Crest Road. Lt. Debbie Sumrall said law enforcement officers went to the home to carry a lawful court order. She did not elaborate. While on the scene, investigators spotted what they believed to be an incendiary device, Sumrall said.

A 28-year-old Center Point man has been returned to Alabama to face charges in a 2020 deadly Birmingham shooting. Torace Jakhino Laster is charged with murder in the death of 26-year-old Lamar Markeith Harris. Birmingham police announced the charge against Laster in 2023.
