Two people were seriously injured when police say they shot each other in Birmingham. The shots were exchanged just before 7 p.m. Thursday in the 6400 block of Georgia Road. Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the two men shot each other. Additional details have not been released. Both were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A Montgomery woman has been charged in the death of her infant daughter. Brenika McGhee, 26, is charged with capital murder in the slaying of 4-month-old Zuri McGhee, police announced Thursday. Montgomery police were dispatched at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, to a residence in the 3300 block of Fountain Lane, said Sgt. Tina McGriff. Officers arrived to find Zuri unresponsive. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. McGriff said the baby’s death was ruled a homicide.

An investigation is underway after a woman was shot late this afternoon in west Birmingham. The shooting happened at 5:32 p.m. Thursday at the Elyton Village public housing community on Third Avenue West. Authorities said the shooting happened inside an apartment. The woman was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police are looking for the suspects. No arrests have been made. A juvenile has been charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old in Montgomery. The suspect is the third person charged with capital murder in the slaying of Zaveon Simpkins. Montgomery police Sgt. Tina McGriff said the young male was taken into custody Wednesday. Authorities are not releasing his name and age. Police previously announced the arrests of brothers Christopher Kelly, 19, and Christian Kelly, 18.

As Arkia “Kia” Berry was dying alongside her 5-year-old son and her boyfriend inside a vehicle peppered with gunfire, she sent a text message to a friend that contained just one word – Jaco. Investigators believe her last act in life was to give investigators a clue as to who carried out the horrific 2024 triple homicide.
