HALEYVILLE - First responders will take center stage at the City of Haleyville’s annual 9-1-1 Festival, this Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, which promises entertainment for all ages. The festival, sponsored by the Haleyville Area Chamber of Commerce and 9-1-1 Festival Committee, honors the City of Haleyville for being the location of the nation’s first emergency 9-1-1 call, made in 1968. “We’re hoping we have good weather for our 9-1-1 festival,” Mayor Ken Sunseri emphasized.

LYNN - Midway University is pleased to announce that Brandon Hill, of Lynn, has been named to its dean’s list for the 2025 spring semester. To be named to the list, a student must be classified full-time and obtain a 3.60 grade point average for the semester. Midway University is a private, co-educational institution located in Woodford County and part of the greater Lexington, Kentucky area.
Sutherland accepts Hartselle City Schools superintendent position

HALEYVILLE - Haleyville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Holly Sutherland has been named superintendent of Hartselle City Schools. Sutherland announced the news to a system wide gathering of faculty and staff at Haleyville Elementary School Thursday afternoon, May 22. A Haleyville native, Sutherland has served as Haleyville City Schools superintendent since 2017. Prior to that, she was the principal of Haleyville High School for three years.
Cemetery transformed through Eagle Scout project

DOUBLE SPRINGS - A project developed to better recognize the graves of veterans buried at Double Springs Memorial Cemetery by creating the town’s first memorial honoring all veterans, has been personal to each person who participated. The project also earned Eagle Scout status for Noah Blevins, 14, a member of Double Springs Boy Scout Troop 92, and a student at Double Springs Middle School.

Classified ads for the May 28, edition will need to be submitted by noon Friday, May 23. Display advertising for the May 28, edition will need to be submitted by 12 p.m., as well. The Alabamian will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day. Publisher Horace Moore and the Alabamian staff wish everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day.
Partridge named to SNHU President’s List

HALEYVILLE - Jasmine Partridge, of Haleyville, has been named to Southern New Hampshire University's spring 2025 president's list. The spring terms run from January to May. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the president's list. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

The National Weather Service has much of Alabama under an enhanced risk for severe weather, including tornadoes this afternoon, Tuesday, May 20. The threat is coming as planned work on all 10 NOAA Weather Radio transmitters in central Alabama will be ongoing. This means that weather radios will NOT be broadcasting any weather warnings that might occur today.
Lynn and WCHS graduation ceremonies moved to 3 p.m. today

WINSTON COUNTY - Due to the potential for severe weather Tuesday evening, May 20, the graduation ceremonies for Lynn and Winston County high schools that were originally scheduled to take place this evening will both now take place at 3 p.m. today, May 20. Lynn's ceremony will be held in the gymnasium, while WCHS' ceremony will take place at Malcolm Blake Stadium. If it rains at 3 p.m., the ceremony will be moved into the gym.
