In Mississippi, nearly 350 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty, including eight K-9 officers. Some of the deaths were documented as early as the 1870s, while others are more recent, such as the deaths of Hinds County Sheriff's Sgt. Martin Shields Jr. in February; Summit Police Patrolman Troy Floyd in August 2024; George County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy Malone in January 2024; and Madison Police Officer Randy Tyler in June 2023.
