Following public outcry over the decision to adopt “The Hawks” as the new Amityville School District logo, the Amityville School Board voted Tuesday night to rescind the name and reengage the community in a renewed effort to determine a replacement. The district is seeking a new mascot name/image in response to a state mandate requiring all school districts to eliminate Native American references and imagery from logos and mascots.

Just before his 17th birthday, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was hurrying to meet friends when something compelled him to step into the Basilica of St. Joseph in Buenos Aires. That moment would change the course of his life, inspiring him to become a priest and eventually lead the Catholic Church as Pope Francis from 2013 until his death April 21, 2025. He was 88. His viewing is underway with a funeral scheduled for Saturday. Francis was born in December 1936 in Flores, a neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
