A basement vault belonging to accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex A. Heuermann was disassembled Thursday as his family prepares to sell the Massapequa Park home where he lived during what prosecutors have alleged was a decades-long killing spree. The large Pentagon door to the walk-in vault featured Heuermann’s initials "RAH" on it. It was pulled through Bilco doors by a team of five movers and hauled away on a trailer hitched to a Ford Super Duty 350 shortly before noon Thursday.

Emergency personnel responded to a Bohemia home Saturday afternoon regarding reports of multiple dead cats inside the residence, officials said. Bohemia Fire Department officials confirmed they had been called around 3 p.m. regarding an ammonia smell inside the Westminster Drive house. The Suffolk County SPCA and Islip HazMat team were also at the scene, as well as the fire marshal, who posted "Keep Out" signs around the home.

A Suffolk judge sentenced a Holbrook man convicted of operating as a major drug trafficker to 53 years in state prison Tuesday, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said. Russell Defreitas, 55, who represented himself at trial before acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony Senft, was convicted of 92 counts for his role in what prosecutors described as a large-scale cocaine and fentanyl trafficking operation that caused two overdose deaths, prosecutors said in a news release.
