Justin Shadek’s first-inning pickoff attempt, with “attempt” being a loose term, was hardly an A-plus move as the Rutgers pitcher threw casually to first base as Iowa’s Gable Mitchell dove back. The soft throw, though, bounced in the dirt and caromed into the spacious foul territory at Charles Schawb Field, toward the right-field railing. For Mitchell, that was ample green light to hustle and take not one but two free bases.
