Jason Whitaker has been the chief of Glen Carbon's Fire Protection District since May 2021. He leads a mostly volunteer department. The same year he began as chief, the district opened its new five-bay station on West Main Street, replacing a much older dual-bay facility that was razed soon after the new station officially opened. The next project is to add a regional training center for firefighters near the new station.

Fire and ambulance personnel have a planned prepared to ensure emergency services can still reach residents once the Illinois Department of Transportation begins work to realign the Route 157/162 intersection in Glen Carbon. The project will close the intersection for up to two years as IDOT replaces the two current T-intersections.

About 15 different vehicles representing a variety of classes were on hand in Schon Park on Sept. 4 for a media preview event ahead of the annual Kicks on 66 Car Show and Cruise on Sept. 7. Jane Ahasay, executive director of the Glen-Ed Food Pantry, watched the vehicles from a nearby picnic table. "We're very excited and honored to be a benefactor this year," she said. Construction continues at the southeast corner of Center Grove Road and Route 157, next to Imo's Pizza, as workers have started to put up structural steel for a new liquor store. Sav-On Liquor & Wine will open its sixth Metro East location when its Edwardsville store is ready. According to previous information on its website, Sav-On is the leading packaged liquor store serving the area since 1999. Family owned and operated, the company specializes in liquor, convenience and coffee.
