By LIONEL TIPTONWICHITA, Kansas – Playing for the final time as high school soccer teammates, sisters Kyia and Nevaeh Kelly created a lasting memory Saturday. They scored both of Rose Hill’s goals in the Rockets’ 2-1 victory over Louisburg in the Class 4-1A third-place match. Trailing 1-0 after the Wildcats scored in the fifth minute, junior Kyia scored an unassisted equalizer in the 10th minute. It remained tied until the 69th minute, late in the second half.

By LIONEL TIPTONPRATT, Kansas – The heat was on Friday, and it affected the final four teams in Class 2-1A softball. After highs in the 60s Thursday, the temperature jumped into the 80s for Day 2, and poise started to wilt in the heat. It had a profound effect on the third-seeded Bluestem Lions. In their semifinal against No. 2 seed Inman, Bluestem took advantage of a Teuton error to jump to a 1-0 first-inning lead.

By Charles ChaneyTOPEKA — The end of the season was more than that for El Dorado on Wednesday afternoon. After the 10-0 loss to Tonganoxie, it signaled the end of an era for EHS baseball as head coach Adam McCormick coached his last game before moving to Joplin, Mo. “The phrase ‘once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat’ rings true because this place will never leave me,” McCormick said post game.

By LIONEL TIPTONLEON, Kansas – After winning by mercy rule in its opening game Friday, Bluestem showed it could overcome adversity and is just one victory from the Class 2-1A State Softball Tournament. The Lions had taken a 6-0 lead after five innings, only to see Sedgwick rally to tie the score with a six-run sixth inning. “I was scared,” sophomore Dani Orpen said. “I thought we were going to lose.”So was her coach. “I got scared for a little bit,” Bluestem coach Ashtyn Jurging said.
