Two people who have played key roles for the Gordon Parks Museum and the Gordon Parks Celebration were honored during the 21st annual Gordon Parks Celebration Tribute Dinner held Saturday, Oct. 5. The 2024 Learning Tree Award was presented to Arnold Schofield and posthumously to Daryl Roller. Jill Warford, former Gordon Parks Museum executive director and first recipient of the award, presented to Christy Roller.

Bond insurer urges NRMC board to accept its recommendation

On Monday, the Nevada Regional Medical Center Board of Directors received a letter encouraging the board to reconsider accepting Build America Mutual Assurance Company's (BAM) recommended chief restructuring officer. The CRO selected by BAM would help the hospital resolve its financial troubles, which includes a declaration of default for the revenue bonds issued by the city for the hospital.

Delayed tax statements mailed

Real estate owners are finding they don't have as much between receiving their tax statement and the first deadline of Dec. 20. On Tuesday, Bourbon County Treasurer Patty Love said the statements were mailed on Nov. 30 and people were beginning to receive them in the mail Tuesday. The short time frame between receiving the statement and the deadline to pay is not typical for Bourbon County, but it's also within the guideline set by the Kansas State Statute.
Budget work session held

Work on the 2024 budget is closer to completion after city commissioners held a work session Tuesday evening. During the meeting, commissioners learned the General Fund, which runs in a deficit, is set to be the black. City Manager Mark Mitchell detailed the General Fund and Parks Fund during the work session.
