The clock is ticking for nearly half the members of the NYPD’s bomb squad as veteran officers – and their dogs – approach retirement, potentially threatening the city’s safety, union representatives said. Nearly half of the unit’s 45 detectives – 22 in total – have surpassed 20 years on the force, making them eligible to retire as soon as this year, the Detectives Endowment Association said.

One of the six guards charged in the deadly, caught-on-camera beating death of Robert Brooks at an upstate prison has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, according to the Associated Press and the Brooks family lawyer. Christopher Walrath, 36, entered the plea Monday morning, the AP reported. Under the terms of his plea agreement, he would serve a 15-year prison sentence.

Luigi Mangione’s lawyers allege that police illegally searched his backpack after locating him at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, and that none of the evidence inside should be allowed at trial, according to a motion filed Thursday evening. A Bronx man accused of fatally stabbing a fellow subway rider during a dispute on a Manhattan-bound express train last week has been ordered held on $400,000 bail, court records show. Luis Jose-Duarte, 46, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment later that night. According to NYPD records, Sheldon’s death is the first homicide in the subway system in 2025.

An NYPD housing officer was arrested on a charge of official misconduct after allegedly stopping a motorist in Queens while on duty and asking to borrow $1,700 — money he never repaid — law enforcement sources said Thursday. Officer Armando Silvestre, 29, was assigned to monitor NYCHA security cameras in northern Brooklyn. Police said Silvestre stopped a driver on March 1 while in uniform at 159-19 Hillside Ave. in Queens and asked where he could borrow money.
