Police recovered a body from the East River on Wednesday that authorities believe is that of a 2-year-old Bronx boy who has been missing for a month, according to a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation. An NYPD spokesperson said the person was male but his identity was still being confirmed. The boy, Montrell Williams, was last seen on May 10 in Hunts Point, and was wearing a white shirt and a diaper, police said.

The man accused of killing a 61-year-old grandmother who was a bystander in a Harlem shootout this spring was ordered held in jail Monday after pleading not guilty to murder and other charges in Manhattan court. Ricky Shelby, 23, had asked the judge to be released because he said he was targeted by another man who, according to police, shot at Shelby during the incident on the night of April 22 near Malcolm X Boulevard and West 113th Street.

The more seriously injured cyclist remained in intensive care Friday after being slashed in the throat and will likely be out of work for several months, his friends said. Police said a group of cyclists were crossing the bridge from Rockaway to Marine Park when they struck a kite string draped across the bike lane.

New York City residents feel marginally safer in public this year compared to 2023, but still not as safe as they did before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new survey. The poll, conducted by the nonprofit Citizens Budget Commission, also found commuters’ perceptions of subway safety haven’t changed since last year, despite significant efforts and resources from public officials to make them feel more secure.
