COLUMBUS, Ohio — The proposed Ohio state budget plan for the next two fiscal years (2026-2027) passed through the House and Senate on Wednesday. The proposal passed the Republican-controlled Senate along party lines 23-10. The budget involves more than $200 billion in annual spending, beginning with $108.62 billion for 2026 and $110.70 billion for 2027. The budget would make significant changes to what programs are funded through the state and the way that the state funds these programs.

CANTON, Ohio — The Fairview Apache baseball season came to an end Saturday afternoon at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton. The team fell in the DVI state semifinal to the Hawks of Hiland High School by a final of 4-2. The game marked the first state semifinal appearance in program history. "This has been historic in many ways. These guys fought all day," Fairview head coach Andy Singer said. "They showed why it's historic.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A fundamental shift is coming to college sports. On Friday, federal judge Claudia Wilken gave final approval to the House vs. the NCAA settlement, which allows schools to start paying athletes directly. On Leading Edge last Sunday, WTOL 11's Jeff Smith spoke with Bart Lambergman, an attorney specializing in sports for local firm Shumaker. In anticipation of the approval, Lambergman called the ruling one more step in college sports' transformation into professional sports.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — The CDC reported earlier this year a nearly 24% decline, year-over-year, in the number of drug overdose deaths. A member of the Lucas County Sheriff's Office's Drug Abuse Response Team (DART) says you can attribute part of the decline to the availability of naloxone, or Narcan as it's commonly known. Members of DART, as well as the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, had a walk-in event Thursday at the West Toledo YMCA, offering Narcan kits to people in the community.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Walleye are back in the Kelly Cup Finals for the third time in the last five postseasons, and the team looks more determined than ever to bring a trophy home to Toledo. WTOL 11 caught up with the team at practice Wednesday to gauge their focus heading into the championship series. "I've loved our energy," head coach Pat Mikesch said.
