Right now, there is a mission in one hard-hit community to try and make it look and feel more like it used to. Sara Hopkins stopped by Decatur City Hall on Tuesday afternoon to pick up two pawpaw trees. They're small now, but can grow to be 25 or 30 feet tall. That's just what she and her family are looking for as they rebuild their Carlton Drive home, which was leveled on May 26, 2024. In fact, when we interviewed Hopkins last summer, a toilet was about all that was left at the time.

But, voters will soon have a say in how that critical and long-awaited project is funded. A small group of residents gathered at the Fort Smith Senior Activity Center on Monday evening to learn more about what they'll have a chance to vote on this week and next week.

This weekend, firefighters from across our area will unite to honor those who have died in the line of duty. Firefighters will gather at the amphitheater in Memorial Park in Siloam Springs at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon to pay tribute to the firefighters who died doing the job they poured their hearts and souls into each and every day. Andy Ingram is a retired firefighter-paramedic. He helped start the Siloam Springs Fire Department Honor Guard in 2021.

Rogers Public Schools superintendent Jeff Perry says May 26, 2024 is now front and center for his district every time bad weather threatens. Perry says some in the district now deal with PTSD, but never worried about stormy weather prior to last year. He says the district is now taking extra steps to be ready, should something like what happened on that Sunday nearly one year ago happen on an actual school day. The superintendent says he personally will never forget May 26, 2024.
