JACKSON, MI — Due to the “current political climate,” the Jackson Hispanic Heritage Festival has been canceled. Organizers said the decision did not come lightly, and the political climate has created an environment that “challenges the safety, unity and celebratory spirit this festival is meant to foster,” the festival announced in a Thursday, May 8 Facebook post.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI — A water main replacement project will close some busy Jackson roads. The Michigan Department of Transportation and the city of Jackson will replace the water main on East Michigan Avenue and Louis Glick Highway (I-94 BL) between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Waterloo Avenue, as well as on Cooper Street between Louis Glick Highway and Pearl Street. Construction will begin Monday, May 12, and will be completed by Friday, July 18.

JACKSON, MI — The leader of a Black historic group in Michigan is upset the group was denied entry to a local museum. Maurice Imhoff believes race played a role when the Michigan’s Military Heritage Museum turned away the Gospel Army Black History Group, but board president Scott Gerych said Imhoff was told to leave due to a past dispute. “It has nothing to do with race,” Gerych said.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A railway crossing will undergo maintenance in Jackson County, closing a portion of East Michigan Avenue. The Jackson County Department of Transportation is notifying the public of a full road closure on East Michigan Avenue between Mill Street and Willow Drive. The closure will begin at 6 a.m. Monday, May 12 and will be completed by 5 p.m. Friday, May 16.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Jackson County residents voted on several proposals, ultimately passing each on the ballot. Here are the proposals that were supported in the Tuesday, May 6 election. Leoni Township Public Safety MillageLeoni Township voters approved continued funding for police and fire services in the township. The public safety millage received 1,205 votes in favor and 761 votes against on the Tuesday, May 6 election ballot.
