JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Jackson County Animal Control officers are investigating reported animal cruelty after a litter of kittens was thrown from a moving truck. A litter of five kittens was seen being thrown from a silver truck on Monday night, May 12 on County Farm Road in Sandstone Township north of Jackson, according to a post on the Jackson County Animal Shelter’s Facebook page. Only one of the five kittens survived. The kitten, named Benjamin Button, is currently being cared for at the shelter.

JACKSON, MI – A driver ran a red light and crashed into a woman’s vehicle Monday evening as she was leaving a Burger King parking lot. Rescue crews were called at 8:03 p.m. Monday, May 12, to the intersection of N. West Avenue and W. Argyle Street in Jackson for a reported rollover crash with injuries, Jackson Police Deputy Chief Sergio Garcia said. Officers discovered a vehicle on its side in the intersection, having been hit by an oncoming car, Garcia said.

BLACKMAN TWP., MI – It is still a mystery to Blackman-Leoni Township Public Safety Officer Chandler Fryt what drew him to work in law enforcement when he was a child. It just felt right, and he always wanted to help people, he said. Fryt, 29, is a Jackson native who has served in the department for eight years. He is one of the department’s two K-9 handlers, working with police dog Dani, patrolling the two townships.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Jackson firefighters were busy over the weekend battling a trio house fires in the city and nearby Summit Township. On Friday, May 9, fire crews were called at about 7:50 p.m. to the 700 block of Kennedy Street in Jackson after the homeowner called 911 reporting a fire, Jackson Fire Cpt. Frank Huntly said. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the basement. Crews entered and were able to get the fire extinguished within a few minutes, Huntly said.

LENAWEE COUNTY, MI – A woman is dead and a man was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash with a mailbox in Lenawee County Saturday night. Rescue crews were called at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, to Devils Lake Highway, north of Waters Edge Drive in Woodstock Township for a reported motorcycle crash with injuries, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, deputies found the 911 caller performing CPR on the 34-year-old female driver from Hillsdale.
