Jonesville, Hanover-Horton split Cascades boys track title after Jonesville’s first-place finish Friday

EAST JACKSON -- Jonesville put up 138 points as a team at the Cascades Conference boys track meet on Friday at East Jackson to take first in that meet, and secure a share of the conference title with Hanover-Horton. Hanover-Horton had beaten Jonesville in a dual meet earlier this season, but Jonesville came up with a strong response Friday, powered by strong showings in distance events and hurdles.
Grass Lake girls win fifth straight conference track title

EAST JACKSON -- For the first time, there is a five-time champion in girls track in the Cascades Conference. The Grass Lake girls secured their fifth conference title in a row when they put up 107.5 points at Friday’s conference meet at East Jackson. Leslie was second with 99 points. Homer was third with 80. Grass Lake’s run, which began with the state-championship team in 2021, continued through 2022, 2023, 2024 and this season.
Big innings spur Western baseball sweep of Northwest

JACKSON – The Western baseball team kept putting up multi-run innings in a sweep of Northwest on Thursday, winning the first game 10-0 in five innings and the second 20-12. The Panthers had three in the first, three in the second and four in the fourth inning of Game 1. Game 2 saw the Panthers bat around in two of the first three innings to take a 14-0 lead, then add a four-run sixth. In Game 1, DJ VanRiper was 2-for-4. Andrew Parrott was 2-for-3, and Lincoln Levy drove in a pair of runs.
Northwest softball earns sweep of Western

JACKSON – Home runs were flying for both Northwest and Western in an Interstate 8 softball matchup on Thursday, but it was the Mounties putting together big innings in a sweep, winning 11-2 and 15-8. Northwest’s Ari Good broke open the first game with a grand slam in the fourth, part of a five-run inning for the Mounties.
Second-half goals lift Manchester over Michigan Center

MANCHESTER – Two second-half goals a minute apart turned things around for the Manchester girls soccer team Wednesday in a Cascades Conference match with Michigan Center. Down by a goal at halftime, the Flying Dutchmen struck early in the second half, then struck again moments later to pull out a 2-1 win. Ellie Marsh tied it in the 50th minute, clanging a shot off the right post and rolling it in. “I just saw an opportunity and kicked it,” she said.

JACKSON -- The new wrinkle in track and field for the 2025 season is early qualifying. By meeting qualifying standards at approved meets throughout the season, athletes can clinch a spot at state no matter what happens at the regional. Western and Hillsdale Academy are both going to be well represented at the state meet. Several other athletes have already secured spots in multiple events. Freshmen like Austyn Hocter from Hanover-Horton and Concord’s Annie Saenz are early qualifiers.

JACKSON -- Molly Brown of Addison puts herself on top of the leaderboard in yet another event, long jump where she bests Grass Lake’s Leah Starkey’s high mark by an inch, and is second in the 400. That gives her the top mark in five events and in the top two in six, as she already had the top Jackson-area mark in the 100, 200, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

JACKSON -- It must have been a fast track Friday at East Jackson, because many of the new entrants in this week’s leaderboard are from the Dome Classic. Saline has its own crop of new leaderboard marks, including Jackson’s Ahmad Ameen who set a new area-best mark in the 400, surpassing the previous fastest time held by Jackson’s Ahzien Ameen. Manchester hurdler Grant Johnson was voted the top spring sports junior in the Jackson area. Johnson captured 61% of the vote. Columbia Central’s Wyatt Vowell was second and Michigan Center’s Abby Hess third. Voting for the top freshmen and sophomores is underway. Cast a ballot here. The Western tennis team beat Harper Creek 7-1 on Monday to cap off an unbeaten Interstate 8 season. Dru Porter won 6-3, 6-0. Ali Carmody won 6-0, 6-1. Columbia Central picks up sweep: The Golden Eagles beat Leslie 16-0 and 12-2. In the first game Kelsey Fausz had three hits for Columbia Central. Gianna Evans drove in a pair of runs as part of a 10-run first inning. Haily Wetherby struck out five and allowed one hit. In the second game a triple from Evans helped spark a third-inning rally.
