    FLORENCE — Florence resident Ritchie Cormell worked for Honda of South Carolina for 15 years before retiring for health reasons. The 61-year-old West Florence High School graduate was hospitalized for a month in August 2023. He was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver — a progressive disease where healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue. Cooks for Christ is raising money to help Cormell with his medication, medical bills and future transplant costs.

    FLORENCE — Hartsville resident Lenora Eason Lefew loves cooking. She posts photos of her dishes on social media to inspire her daughters in college to come home for a visit. After years of cooking at home, Lefew entered the 2025 Florence Wine & Food Festival cook-off last month. Her shrimp and grits won the competition. Now, she is competing in the Favorite Chef competition. The top cook wins $25,000, an appearance in Taste of Home magazine and a chance to cook with celebrity chef Carla Hall.

    FLORENCE — Publix won't be opening in Florence for a while, but many have read The Post and Courier's coverage of the grocery store and reacted enthusiastically. "I can't wait to have a Publix sub and their wings regularly," one user wrote on Facebook. Publix led The Post and Courier's 2024 most-wanted grocery store poll by garnering votes from 53 percent of the more than 600 voters. Publix has come a long way since its 1930 opening in Winter Haven, Florida.

    FLORENCE —  The wait is over. QuikTrip is open in Florence. QuikTrip, one of the nation's leading convenience/gas station retailers, is on West Palmetto Street just west of Interstate 95. It's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Florence location has eight gas pumps for cars and seven for big rigs. QuikTrip is known for its convenience store, on-the-go meals and full-service QT Kitchens.

    FLORENCE — The recent announcement of a Publix coming to Florence foreshadowed another development. The supermarket will anchor a shopping center at the intersection of West Palmetto Street and South Ebenezer Road in Florence. The Morgan Cos. will build the shopping center, said Trey Morgan, president and CEO of the company. The company expects to complete the purchase of the land in the next few months and start construction later this year.
