    AUSTIN – A bill that would amend the state constitution to ensure that only American citizens can vote in Texas elections came up just short of the finish line Friday. The House voted May 9 on Senate Joint Resolution House Joint Resolution 161. The vote was 98-18 in favor with 20 present and not voting. HJR 161 has an accompanying House measure in HJR 37. Even with the overwhelming vote in support of the resolution, the proposed constitutional amendment needed 100 votes to pass.

    Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office has announced its Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is charging two men arrested for their roles in a coordinated scheme to defraud Florida’s Medicaid program out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in non-emergency medical transportation claims. “Florida’s Medicaid program is not there to line the pockets of fraudsters gaming the system,” Uthmeier said.

    GRANTSVILLE – Two more lawsuits have been filed related to a March 2024 Calhoun County school bus crash that injured 19 students. The newest lawsuits were filed May 7 in Calhoun Circuit court against Jeffrey Brannon and the Calhoun County Board of Education. The first seven were filed May 2.     A member of the zoning board in a small Iowa county is leasing land that would be directly affected by a proposed solar farm project. Adam Glienke is a member of Cherokee County Zoning Board which will vote next week on whether to allow the Maple River Solar Project to move forward.
