    One of Galveston's hottest new attractions aims to combat the persistent, and patently incorrect, perception that Texas is not a surfing state. Since February, the Texas Surf Museum has delighted in proving people wrong. "That's kind of the purpose of the space, is to break that myth and let people know that there is this really rich history," Texas Surf Museum assistant manager Missouri Wilkinson told Chron one morning last month.

    The Galveston hurricane of 1900—or just the Storm, as many islanders usually refer to it nowadays—has inspired no shortage of books, including Erik Larson's superb 1999 nonfiction bestseller Isaac's Storm and Matt Bondurant's more recent novel Oleander City. Simple logic dictates that (still) the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history would also rank among the most dramatic. That makes the scarcity of adaptations in other media frankly shocking.

    Sargassum has shown up in droves on Galveston Beach. But that hasn't apparently stopped tourism early in the summer season, according to officials. mujibwaziri/Getty ImagesSince late April, Galveston's beaches have been awash in a type of free-floating seaweed known as sargassum. The unsightly plant is actually beneficial to the beach, helping to offset dune erosion and providing food to other beach plants and birds who visit more often than tourists from San Antonio or Waco.
