Tucked between decommissioned vessels the USS Cavalla and the USS Stewart, a crowd gathered Monday for the Galveston Naval Museum’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at Seawolf Park. The ceremony paid tribute to the soldiers and sailors who lost their lives serving in the armed forces, especially those who served aboard U.S. Navy submarines. As a bell tolled for each of the submarines and crews lost, volunteers placed red carnations on commemorative plaques for each vessel.

Law enforcement officers from across Galveston County along with members of the community gathered Wednesday at the Galveston Island Convention Center to honor officers who died while on duty. The memorial observance was part of National Police Week, established by Congress in 1962 after President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officer Memorial Day. Thirty-three officers from seven law enforcement agencies were honored during the ceremony. — Jennifer Reynolds

The school’s folklorico dance teams, along with Ball High School’s Ballet Folklorico, performed dances from various regions of Mexico. Law enforcement officers and supporters turned out Monday for the Fifty Club of Galveston County’s 52nd annual awards luncheon honoring officers of the year for all of the agencies in Galveston County. The Fifty Club, formed in the 1970s, provides financial assistance to the families of officers killed or wounded in the line of duty.
