GALVESTONLong-time law enforcement officer Heather Morris made a little history this week when she pinned on a city marshal's star. Morris is the first woman to hold the title of Galveston City Marshal since the post was reestablished in 2016, according to the city. Morris, whose salary is $140,000 year, was among six candidates with extensive law enforcement backgrounds competing for the job, the city said. She replaces Butch Stroud, who retired earlier this year.

Retail detail: Off-price retailer Burlington Stores Inc. must like it around here because it's opening another store. The Burlington, New Jersey-based purveyor of branded apparel and home accessories confirmed Friday it would open a Texas City store in the fall. "We are thrilled to bring a new store to the Texas City community," Julia DePillis, a representative for the company said in a statement. "At this time, we do not have any further information to share.

GALVESTONThe city council Thursday voted against transferring a lease agreement between the city and owner of Inn at the Waterpark to a company wanting to house foreign nationals to bolster the island’s labor force during peak tourist season. Heeding staff recommendations, the council voted unanimously against transferring the 1991 lease agreement with 1859 Historic Hotels Ltd.

GALVESTONRobyn Russell Bushong, a successful publicist and devoted, often relentless, advocate for numerous island causes, died of cancer Sunday at her home near Lake Madeline. She was 77. Bushong’s career included corporate management positions and work in publishing and travel-industry journalism. She was renowned for laser-focused behind-the-scenes work promoting and raising money for organizations such as the Galveston Island Humane Society and the annual Share Your Holidays Food Drive.
