Earlier this afternoon, police said officers are investigating a “suspicious device” reported to the PSNI in the Trench Road area of the city. Police said the report was made to them at around 11.20am this morning and a cordon has been put in place at Knockwellan Park. A number of homes have also been impacted. In an updated statement, police confirmed several cordons are now place around the area.

Police said the suspicious object was found in a property in the Linden Place area of Newtownards close to the Donard Avenue area of the town. Pictures from the scene last night showed two bomb disposal vans and two Toyota Land Cruisers belonging to Army search teams also present. The road had been closed for a number of hours while the police carried out their investigation.

Officers were pelted with debris and fireworks during the disorder, which broke out shortly after 8pm, close to the city walls. A crowd had gathered in the Orchard Row area of the city before police were attacked. The gathering was organised over social media on Monday night. It’s understood that several attempts were made to attack homes in the Fountain Estate before police intervened. Videos posted to social media show crowds of youths shooting fireworks at officers in riot gear.

The funeral of a pensioner who was allegedly murdered by her son has taken place in north Belfast this morning as family and friends gathered to remember her. Marie Green was found dead at her home in the early hours of the morning last Tuesday. Mourners gathered as the 71-year-old’s coffin left Wrays Funeral Home and passed her Shore Road home before a service of thanksgiving for the woman took place at Antrim and Newtownabbey Crematorium.
