BERKELEY – The Township Council introduced a bond ordinance that would provide for $4,560,000 worth of purchases. By law, the township has to pay a small down payment up front, so the ordinance appropriated a total of $4.8 million. The money is going toward a variety of departments. For example, at the Forrest Hill soccer field, there will be beach ramp boards, drainage, and a camera security system.

OCEAN COUNTY – A 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the wildfire that started on April 22 which caused thousands of evacuations and burned more than 15,000 acres. The juvenile, whose identity is not being released, was charged with Aggravated Arson, Arson, and Hindering Apprehension, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said. This is the second arrest in relation to this incident. Joseph Kling, 19, of Waretown, was previously charged with Aggravated Arson and Arson.

TOMS RIVER – As officials build the school district’s budget, they are facing low state aid, increasing expenses, and a student body with rapidly evolving needs. Superintendent Michael Citta said at the beginning of the month that there is still a $22.3 million hole in the 2025-2026 school budget. They will continue to work with the state to try to resolve this. “You cannot cut $22 million from this budget,” he said. There’s nothing that can be raised with a referendum by law.
