THERE’S fresh hope in the long-running saga to restore New Milton’s first building. Plans to bring the town’s disused station master’s house into community use have repeatedly hit the buffers since former town mayor the late Keith Craze spearheaded a project to convert the site into a heritage centre in 2018. But today (Friday) the Friends of New Milton Station (FNMS) officially launched its campaign for No.1 New Milton, with hopes to raise £40,000 in seed funding.

A New Milton man has been sentenced after trying to import drugs into the country. Thomas Prior (35), of Pennywell Gardens, pleaded guilty to importing a class B drug when he appeared at Southampton Crown Court. Officers intercepted 4.7kg of herbal cannabis – due to be delivered to his home – at East Midlands Airport in October 2022, the hearing was told. Prior was also sentenced for possessing a class B drug with intent to supply.

A BID to demolish a New Milton house for two new homes was strongly opposed by the town council as “cramped and contrived”. An application to New Forest District Council sought permission to bulldoze the present home and annex at Stretton, 26 Avenue Road, and build two detached houses. Reviewing the application, the council’s planning committee registered a strong objection to the development, which includes parking and cycle storage, and a new dropped curb.

A police investigation has been launched after a fire and damage to an electricity cable in a shop cut off more than 700 Lymington properties for over four-and-a-half hours. Firefighters responded to a call-out reporting a basement blaze at Top Barbers & Lymingtan on High Street at 2.20pm on Sunday. Crews from New Milton and Beaulieu found smoke throughout caused by a damaged electrical supply.

CALSHOT RNLI rescuers went to the aid of sailors whose dinghy twice capsized in a busy Solent shipping lane. Sunday’s first call-out came as the volunteers were recovering their D-class inshore lifeboat during a morning training exercise. Having quickly relaunched to carry out a welfare check, they found the vessel’s occupants were happy to right it and continue on their way.
