Cora Rooney was fifth in the 200m backstroke final at the Irish Open Swimming Championships. Ballyshannon native Rooney finished in 2:19.93 in the final on Tuesday evening at the National Aquatic Centre. The Swilly Seals swimmer, in lane 6, came through her heat in 2:21.34 before clocking 2:19.53 - a new personal best over the distance. Rooney was also in the 100m backstroke final, finishing sixth and she still has the 50m version to come.

It was a case of mission accomplished for Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry at the Irish Open Swimming Championships. The Marlins Swimming Club ace won the 100m breaststroke final in 1:06.87, also sealing her place at this year’s World Championships. Back in the competitive groove again after a post-Olympic hiatus, McSharry was satisfied with her work at the National Aquatic Centre. “It was pretty good,” the Grange native said.

Buncrana native Heidi Gill has moved to Derry City from Finn Harps. Midfielder Gill was the captain of the Finn Harps Women’s U19s last season. She was named as the player of the year at the end of the season, sharing the accolade with Codie Walsh. Now, the former Buncrana Hearts youth player has signed with Derry City, who play in the NIFL Women's Premiership.

A Ballyshannon man has pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice. Jason McDonagh admitted to asking a woman to withdraw a complaint against him following a stabbing incident. McDonagh, of Lawne Park, Ballyshannon, was brought to Donegal Circuit Court by prison officers from Castlerea Prison, where he is in custody. The 34-year-old spoke only to plead guilty when he was formally arraigned before Judge John Aylmer.

St Bridget’s Boxing Club in Clonmany were the big Donegal winners at the Ulster 123 Championships on Sunday. At the Rochester’s BC in Derry, four St Bridget’s boxers won titles, three of them in the ring, to lead the charge from Donegal that will now head to the National Championships. Patrick McDaid had his hand raised in the Boy 3 68kgs final. The St Bridget’s, Clonmany puncher was given the nod in a slender 3-2 split decision against Pearse McCann from Gilford.
