A man who made bogus 999 calls to the emergency services reporting bodies floating in the water off the coast of Donegal and who also broke into a number of churches has been jailed. Nathan Coughlan (28), who is originally from Ennis in Co Clare and now in custody at Castlerea Prison, appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court on Thursday before Judge John Aylmer for sentencing on a raft of offences.

Mr McGovern of Annaghmacooleen, Cloone, Co Leitrim, passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness. He was married to Kathleen and a father of three Ciaran, Gavin and Jacinta. Mr McGovern will repose at Smiths Funeral Home, High St Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim on Friday, May 30, 2025 from 5pm concluding with prayers at 7.45pm. His funeral will be held in St Marys Church, Cloone, on Saturday, May 31 at 12 noon followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Two female pedestrians were killed in separate road collisions in Meath and Wexford yesterday, marking three deaths on Irish roads in a single day. In Meath, a woman in her 60s died when she was struck by a car. The fatal road traffic collision occurred on the Dublin Road (R135), in Ashbourne, Co Meath, yesterday. Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of the collision, which happened at around 7.10pm. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Lady’s Bay in Buncrana is one of just two beaches in the country where the public are advised against swimming due to concerns over water quality. It comes as the new report released by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified the water quality at the beach as ‘Poor.’In regards Lady’s Bay in Buncrana, the EPA report stated, “The main source of pollution affecting the bathing water is untreated wastewater released occasionally from the town's collecting system.

The collision occurred close to the Manor Roundabout on the N14 Manorcunningham, Co Donegal, at around 8.30am this morning. Gardaí, the fire service and an ambulance are currently at the scene. The road remains passable at this time. A spokesperson for gardaí said, “Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the N14 at Manorcunningham, Co. Donegal, which took place at around 8:30am on Friday, 2nd May, 2025.
