Residents in the metro area began preparations for the winter storm in earnest on Friday and by Saturday afternoon freezing rain left roads coated with a slick of ice. The Kansas City Chiefs’ charter plane flight to Denver for Sunday’s Broncos game was delayed partly due to the ice. The team eventually made it safely to the Mile High City.

    The first thing you see when you arrive at Hoxie Feedyard in northwest Kansas is corn. Roughly 225 million pounds of it sits in a pile so large that it makes the tractors that feed it to 60,000 cattle look like toy trucks. Corn is the most valuable crop in Kansas – in 2022, farmers collected $3.6 billion from corn, at $7.2 a bushel, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s $1.5 billion more than the next highest crop – winter wheat.
