It's hard to top the percussive power of "The 1812 Overture" but the fireworks Sunday night at Celebration at the Station rivaled the cannon fire that's part of the classical piece. The annual Memorial Day celebration, with music provided by the Kansas City Symphony, packed in a crowd that filled the seats in front of the bandstand at Union Station and covered the north lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial.

Spring is my favorite time of the year. The pleasant weather is a call to open the windows of our homes and be treated to the smells of spring flowers, fresh cut grass and the sounds of birds doing their part to uphold the whole "birds and the bees" thing. The joyous noise from our winged friends come in the form of chirps, peeps, short songs and ascending trills. I love to hear the cooing exchanges between turtle doves.

Residents in the metro area began preparations for the winter storm in earnest on Friday and by Saturday afternoon freezing rain left roads coated with a slick of ice. The Kansas City Chiefs’ charter plane flight to Denver for Sunday’s Broncos game was delayed partly due to the ice. The team eventually made it safely to the Mile High City.
